Free Web Site Quilt Block Pattern

Greetings quilting friends. Just wanted to let you know about a new FREE quilt block program we're about to launch. Beginning this Monday, 7/6/09, for the next nine Mondays we will be loading a FREE block pattern. After nine weeks, you will have nine completed blocks. On the tenth week, we will give you the setting instructions. We will have the blocks completed in two different color choices, reproductions and Christmas. Or, choose to use your stash and see what you can create. We will have the blocks kitted and available for you to purchase to be shipped to you every Monday. The picture is a sneak peak at the layout.

If we can get a lot of participants, we will have a quilt show in October to show off the completed projects and maybe win a little prize for viewers choice. So, please e-mail me and let me know if you're doing our web quilt and send pictures, too.

Only 49 days.... until the first fall NFL football game. Ok, so I know you probably don't care but I could be the football wife and have a football husband widower. I don't really follow any team, except Ohio State I just like to watch it. I love to have it on and sew away. Anyways, here's what's new: QSI shop hop starts tomorrow with Lemon day on Tuesday. My project for this Shop Hop is called Lemonade so we're having lemon day to celebrate. We'll have fresh lemonade and lemon flavored treats.

Here's another countdown for you. If you've followed my blog, you'll know I'm a HUGE Billy Joel fan. Only 23 days until I see my next concert. About the millionth time I've seen him but I'll keep going as long as he keeps playing.

Stay tuned for an announcement regarding a free block of the week pattern starting on July 6th.

We're busy getting ready for the NQA Show this week. Stop by and say hi if you're in the area. Here's a new quilt I designed just in time for NQA. This uses a "convenience" fabric in the center and two borders. Takes less than an hour to whip up and looks fabulous! This fabric is from the Clara Barton collection by Windham. The center piece is a reproduction from the Clara Barton museum (founder of the Red Cross) and has signatures in the center of the blocks. (click on photo for close up view). The kit will be down in the booth for NQA and is only $29.99 for this 46" x 50" quilt.

We have received about 200 bolts of fabric so far in June. We just got Need it Neutrals by Andover, Figgy Pudding by Moda and Crazy Eight by Sandy Gervais for Moda.

Our web site is up again. We need a little time to get the items for sale loaded back onto the web site. With the NQA show and the QSI Shop Hop events coming up we're a little backed up right now.

NQA Little Quilt Auction

We love to go to the little quilt auction at the NQA show. It's on Friday night (6/19) and you can just come for the auction, you don't have to buy dinner. Here's my donation for the auction. I call it "Ode to Jo" because it is made using 84 different Jo Morton fabrics. It measures 11 1/2" by 14 1/2".

40 – 2 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles
30 – 2 ½” squares

Using the 4 patch rectangle blocks from clue #1 and the 4 patch square blocks from clue #2 and the background fabrics from above, layout your pieces to look like this:

Click on the current issue then click on the cover page. Go to page 15 to see the layout. I'll try to figure out how to get my image in here.****

Sew the blocks into rows, then sew the rows together.

Make ten of these blocks. Label them block #3.

Well, here it comes! Some of the new fabric that was ordered at quilt market has started to arrive. Today, we received Kansas Winter by Kansas Troubles Quilts and Moda Fabrics. If you like Kansas Troubles, you'll like this new collection. It's their traditional style. We also have the charm packs, jelly rolls, layer cakes, turnovers and honey buns to go with the fabric. Since we(Dublin, O) will be hosting the Memorial Golf tournament next week, I thought you might like to see the golf fabrics we have in stock. Stone Cottage

Remember the Stone Cottage fabric I mentioned a while back? Here is the quilt we made from this collection. Isn't it wonderful?! The colors are so warm and pretty. It would make a comfy throw with flannel on the back to cuddle under during a cool spring night. The pattern is from the magazine Quilts & More Summer 2009. (Which, by the way, has many wonderful projects, 3 of which we have finished and one we are working on and we have kits for 3 of them.) The pattern is called Creme Brulee and it was designed by Dublin's own Gerri Robinson. The finished size is 61 1/2" square.

We have several kits left and they are $54.95.

Aaaah...back from Quilt Market. It's a crazy place to go. All the excitement of searching for the latest and greatest new things from patterns, books, notions & fabric, it's all there and then some. I found some cool leather buttons. They are laser cut and embossed. They were using these to embellish purses. They layered them with the large dill wood buttons and they looked fabulous on the purses. Look for those soon in the shop. Then there was all the new fabric.... it's so hard to choose. But, I forced myself:) You'll see more Jo Morton, of course, more civil war, more trendy pottery barn looking fabric, a small line with a butterfly print, Flourish the new Debbie Beaves line, new farmer's market fat quarters (fruits & vegetables), new collection for a cause by Moda and much more! Keep in mind that some of these fabrics will be in the shop soon and some won't be shipping until December. So, if you're looking for something specific, give us a call and we'd be glad to call you when these fabrics arrive.

JO MORTON FANS here's the scoop. I sat through the presentation before Jo's so I could get a front row seat to her schoolhouse. I was so excited, she brought in a huge stack of quilts to show - new stuff from her new book, new club 9 and some other quilts she hasn't decided what to do with yet. She holds up the first quilt, I take this picture. She holds up the next quilt, I go to take a picture and my camera is full!!!! Darn those 800 Route 66 photos! But, she will have these quilts in her booth today so I'll get some more photos. But, I believe this quilt is a free download on Andover fabrics web site. (http://www.andoverfabrics.com/) It uses the new shirtings fabric and the new Cinnamon and Spice fabrics which we have both collections in stock. I just checked and the pattern isn't there yet but it will be soon so keep checking.

Here's a look at about 1/4 of the booths at Quilt Market. On Thursday, we spent the day at Schoolhouse. It's a crazy day of 15-30 minute presentations on the latest fabric, patterns & books. Then we went to Sample Spree, an even CRAZIER place where vendors bring their wares to sell. I picked up a few samples and patterns. Today, we'll get to go inside to the booths to search for the latest and greatest goodies.

This was what I called the bottle tree farm. This gentleman from California makes bottle trees and has them all over his front yard. I asked: "how many?" Over 400! He goes into the desert and collects all treasures left behind and this is his artwork.

Route 66.

Donkeys just roam the town of Oatman, AZ waiting to be fed. In Oatman, I felt like an 1800's gunslinger was going to emerge from the saloon at any moment and start a gun fight!

Another iconic item along the way. I can't remember what state he was in but can't you just hear the kids screaming on a hot summer day after being couped up in the car all day.

More route 66

The first two pictures are from Illinois at the rabbit ranch. This gentleman has a love of all things rabbits from cars to the fuzzy little creatures. He even had his rabbit, Montana, up for the presidential election until his untimely death last year. He works out of his somewhat refurbished gas station so he's around most days to talk with tourists. Inside was full of route 66 things old and new. His "art" was inspired by two locations further on down the road. The first being Cadillac ranch in Texas. This farmer erected these Cadillacs, way out in the middle of his field, at the exact angle of the great pyramids. They used to be pink but unfortunately people have spray painted over them. I don't want my quilting blog to become the route 66 blog but this is so much fun to share.

Traveling Route 66

I'm baaack. You may have noticed the short absence here. I just got back from a two week trip driving route 66 with a friend all the way! That's from Chicago to LA! (And, by the way it was 100! degrees in LA yesterday) The three most interesting things were: 1. The People. 2. The changing landscape across this great country of ours. 3. The interesting artwork along the way.
Let's start with the people. It was fun to see the reactions of people when we said we were traveling route 66 from beginning to end. Some were like, why in the world would you do that and others were like wow, that must be fun. We met people from all over the world, one man from the Netherlands who was BIKING! the whole route. A man from Italy who was traveling all over the USA including 66 for eight weeks. Another man from England who again was traveling around the US including 66. Meeting the people was twofold. First, there were the tourists we met: 7 people from Hilliard/Dayton area at the Grand Canyon, a couple at a restaurant in AZ wearing an OSU sweatshirt had a daughter there and many more. Then there were the people who lived along the route who were making a living off of it. I would say at least everyday we stopped at some quirkly little place and meet some very interesting people that had lived there all their lives with stories about the people who have traveled the route through the years. I won't bore you with all the details but it was a blast. I highly recommend it. Tomorrow, I'll post some pictures and blog more about #'s 2 & 3.

Mystery Quilt clue #2

Here is clue #2.

If you haven’t already started the Red Rooster Quilts Mystery Quilt, it’s not too late. Just pick up the January/February issue of The Ohio Country Register. Or you can get Clue #1 from our blog at www.redroosterquilts.blogspot.com. You can call the store for a kit for $69.95.

Cut 4 – 1 ½” x width of fabric strips from Fabric B (or 1 from each of 4 different fabrics if making scrappy)
Cut 4– 1 ½” x width of fabric strips from Fabric C

Sew one Fabric B strip to one Fabric C strip along the long edge. Press toward the dark. You will have 4 strip sets.

Cut 84 – 1 ½” slices from the 4 strip sets. Sew two together to make a four-patch that is 2 ½” x 2 ½”. You will have 42 square four patch blocks.

From Fabric C:
Cut 2 – 4 ½” x width of fabric strips. Sub cut into 25 – 2 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles.
Cut 5 – 2 ½” squares from the remaining 4 ½” strip.

Make 5 blocks that look like the picture on the upper left (#1). Make 5 blocks that look like the picture on the upper right side (#2).
Put them in separate zip lock bags labeled block #1 & #2
Finished size will be 4 ½” x 6 ½” of #1. Finished size will be 6 ½” x 8 ½” of #2.

EmbroidaBlock

Isn't this cool! If you have an embroidery machine listen up. If you don't, you'll want one after you read this. Here's how this works. You hoop your stabilizer and in some cases batting, too. The embroidery machine stitches out placement lines. Then, you put the fabric down and the machine stitches the embroidery over the pink piece. Then you keep putting your pieces down, right sides together and the machine stitches them in place. It's like paper piecing in your embroidery hoop. The left sample is the String Piecing pattern. The right picture is of the Block of the Month class that we're going to start in March. Stop in and see the sample. It's so fun to do.

We just received the entire collection of Jo Morton's new fabric called Fairfax County. Isn't it wonderful? ! !

And, it's here just in time to use in the new Jo Morton Little Women's Club sample. The new club starts in March so you still have time to sign up and join us. You'll love her method of creating half square triangles, quarter square triangles and flying geese. VERY accurate which is what you need for all that small piecing.

Did you watch the whole game? If not, you missed a good one. Now I know I said I was rooting for the Steelers, but, after watching all the pregame hype, I wouldn't have been sad if the Cardinals won. I wanted it for Kurt Warner but Larry Fitzgerald will get another chance. And, how about that former Buckeye Santonio Holmes! What a catch!!!!!

Ok, enough of that. I told you when I started this blog that I liked football and I'd have to sneak it in.

Here's what I did this weekend. This first little quilt on the left, and when I say little it's 11" x 12 1/2" and used 80 - 1 1/4" half square triangles, is for Jo Morton's Little Women's club. They are going to love this one. We are starting the new group of quilts in March and if you want to learn some very accurate methods for piecing small quilts, this club is for you. These techniques can be used in larger quilts too, but they make for very accurate little quilts. I am just loving this so much.

The little quilt on the top is about 9x12. The pattern is from Fit to Frame: Set Twelve using the new fabric Olde Glory IV by Windham. I used the paper piecing method. I am in the process of quilting it and then I'll probably frame it.

The last little quilt on the right is about 17x20. It's also from Fit to Frame: Set Twelve and uses the Olde Glory fabric line.

Did you know that if you click on the pictures, you can get a closer look? Just don't look too close as you'll see the dirty floor beneath. No matter how many times we clean, that pesky snow just keeps sneaking in here.

Well, I got a lot done on our snow day. I finished a Jo Morton Little Women's club sample, put the borders on my daughter's t-shirt quilt and put the binding on a throw. Sounds like I may need to look for something else to do next week. They keep saying it's going to snow but they won't say how much. In the mean time, the leak in the classroom roof will keep me busy. Can't wait for Spring and that new roof!

Tomorrow is our "Souper" Bowl Saturday party. Please bring in as many cans as you can to be donated to the Dublin Community Food Pantry. Fabric will be on sale tomorrow. Select fabric will be up to 50%! off. A one yard minimum will be required from the sale fabric.

I want a snow day. The kids get plenty; isn't it time for the adults to have one. Just in case we all get stuck inside tonight or tomorrow, I thought I'd give you a free pattern great to use with a charm pack or two. If you only have one, adapt the size to be a tablerunner. Enjoy! Please check the front page of our web site for store closing information in case of snow.

Laurel Charm Quilt
Finished size ~32" x 37"

2– Moda Laruel Charm Packs or
60 dark 5” squares and 3 light 5” squares
¾ yard light fabric for side triangles and inner border
1/3 yard for binding
1 yard backing
40” x 45” piece of batting

Cutting:
· Cut 7 – 2 ¼” strips from the light fabric, sub-cut into
108 – 2 ¼” squares.
· Cut 4 – 1 ½” strips for inner border
· Choose 3 light charm squares and cut them into 4 – 2 ¼” squares from each 5” square. I randomly choose 3 places to use these squares in place of the light fabric squares.
· From 30 dark 5” squares cut them into two rectangles from each. One should be 2 ¼” x 5” and the other
2 ¾” x 5”. You’ll need 30 of each size.
· From 2 – 2 ¼” x 5” rectangles, cut 2 – 2 ¼” squares for corners of inner border.
· From 4 – 2 ¾” x 5” rectangles, cut 1 – 2 ¾” square for corners of outer border.
* From the binding fabric, cut 4 – 2 ¼” strips.

Putting it together:

Draw a diagonal line on the back of each light 2 ¼” square. (I know this is tedious, but, I really like the accuracy of this method) Choose 30 – 5” squares. Lay one 2 ¼” square to the corner of one 5” square aligning the raw edges. Sew across the diagonal line. Trim the excess square away. Repeat for the other 3 corners. Repeat for all 30 blocks. Press the seams of two opposite corners in and the other two opposite corners out.

Arrange the blocks into 6 rows of 5 blocks. Sew the blocks into rows, then sew the rows together.

Using the 2 ¼” x 5” rectangles, sew together two strips with 5 rectangles each for the top and bottom and 2 strips with 6 rectangles plus the 2 ¼” squares on each end for the sides. Sew these borders to the top, bottom and sides.

Sew the light inner border to the sides first, then the top and bottom.

Using the 2 ¾” x 5” rectangles, sew together two strips with 6 rectangles for the top and bottom and two strips with 7 rectangles plus the 2 ¾” squares on each end for the sides. Sew these borders on. Measure your quilt before you sew these together. I had to sew mine with scant seam allowances to get it to fit. Theoretically, these should fit, but…. I’m not perfect so mine would not have fit without the scant seam allowances. You could also cut down your inner border a bit to make it fit. Or, you could add a little piece of another strip to make it fit.

Now you’re ready to layer with batting and batting, quilt and bind. Enjoy, I really liked this one. ~ Karen

Here's my latest creation. I used the Declaration of Independence Panel in the center. I love these old red, white & blue fabrics we have. We have two collections that work nicely together that would give you that old worn and loved look. They are Civil War VI and Old Glory IV by Windham. I'm working on a sample right now using both. But, in the mean time, you can whip out this little quilt in a jiffy. The pattern is $8.95 and the kit that includes that pattern and fabric for the top and binding is $39.95.

I have designed a Mystery Quilt for The Ohio Country Register. I love this little paper. It always has ads for some great little stores around Ohio that up right up my alley. I try to fit them in whenever I travel. We even picked one up last week while in North Carolina and stopped at a couple of quilt shops. Anyways, for those of you that like mystery quilts, in each issue this year there will be a clue. Get your friends together and try it. It only uses three colors. Ever buy a larger scale print and say: "what am I going to do with this"? Well, this quilt would be perfect for those. You need 1 larger scale print, 1 medium to dark fabric to coordinate with it and one light background. Simple, right? For those people who are stumped by picking out fabric for it, just give us some color options and we'll do it for you. A kit costs $69.95. The quilt is 52" x 70" finished, a perfect lap size.

Cut 9 - 2 1/2" strips from Fabric B (or 1 strip from each of the 6 different fabrics and 1 more strip from 3 of the fabrics for a total of 9 strips if making scrappy)

Sew one Fabric B strip to one Fabric C strip along the long edge. Repeat with remaining strips. Press toward the dark.

Cut 232 - 1 1/2" slices from the nine strips.

Sew two of the 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces together to make a four patch. You will need 116 four patch blocks. These will be rectangle in shape four patches. They will measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".
Be sure to sew them together so that fabric C is in the upper left and lower right corner and Fabric B is in the upper right and lower left corners.

Don't fret, this is the step with the most pieces. It will be easier from here on out. Don't forget to pick up the next issue of the Ohio Country Register for the Red Rooster Quilts Mystery Quilt Clue #2.

My new year's resolution is to blog more! After a brief hiatus, I'm back:) There's so much going on here I don't know where to start! The new class schedule for Winter is on the web site. We get a shipment from UPS daily! It's like Christmas everyday here. So, here's what he's brought us lately. The new line from Jo Morton called Providence. Where: Round Lake Christian Camp, Lakeville, Ohio (1 ½ hour drive)
When: Thursday, March 26th @6:00 pm through Sunday, March 29th @1pm
Fee: $295 which includes 3 nights lodging and all meals except dinner on Saturday.

You’re invited to join us on our first annual Quilter’s Spring Break Retreat. One lucky retreater will win a Janome JP760 sewing machine. Plus, we’ll have door prizes and exclusive patterns and kits especially for you.

On Thursday evening, we’ll come together to make a small project and play some games. On Friday, we’ll provide a new pattern especially for you with kits available plus we’ll have a demo on a new technique. Then, you can sew the day away! We’ll repeat this on Saturday. Sunday, we’ll have a wonderful brunch and then close with Show & Tell!

Rug Punch

Here's a picture (OK, yes it's sideways....I can't figure out why just yet but my techie daughter will straighten it out for me) of my latest obsession.....rug punch. It's sort of a cross between punch needle and rug hooking. The needle is like a punch needle where you push it all the way in and you get a perfect size loop every time. It's unlike rug hooking where you have to be very careful about getting your loops all the same size. But, it does look like rug hooking since you use hand dyed wool yarn. Little Women's Club

Quilts on the fence

We always get a lot of compliments during Shop Hop when we display the quilts on the fence. We really enjoy showing off our work and it really makes a statement!

To wash or not to wash?

We frequently get asked "Should I pre-wash my fabric?" So, I thought I'd share some information I recently received from P&B Textiles.

"Care and treatment for your P&B Fabrics:

It is the nature of cotton fabric that some changes may occur when it is washed and dried. Regional water quality, water temperature, detergent varietes and dryer temperture can all affect shrinkage, bleeding and fading.

At P&B Textiles, we pride ourselves on producing superior fabrics, which will retain their quality if properly treated. Please help to educate your customers about the proper care of cotton fabrics:
* If you are making an art quilt or wall hanging that won't be washed, it is recommended that you do not pre-wash your fabric.
* If the quilt is dusty, tumble it in a cool dryer for a few minutes and shake it out.
* If you pre-wash fabric, do not use hot water or a hot dryer. Once quilts are made, they should only be washed and dried in cold water and a cool dryer (or dried flat) and only if the fabric was pre-shrunk prior to construction of the quilt.
* If you are making a quilt with light and dark fabrics, it is suggested that you pre-wash dark fabrics to remove any potential bleeding. This can be done in cold water. A good test of bleeding is to add a light colored or white piece of fabric to the dark wash, and see if any color bleeds onto it. If so, repeat the washing process until the light-colored swatch comes out without any color change.
* Detergents can fade fabrics. It is recommended that you use a gentle detergent to wash quilts, and no detergent at all for pre-shrinking. Orvis is recommended.

If you have followed these guidelines, your fabric should not shrink more than 5% selvage to selvage, and most fabrics won't bleed or fade at all."

Even though these guidelines are from P&B Textiles, I have received similar recommendations from other manufacturers. Hope this helps when you're trying to decide whether to pre-wash or not to pre-wash.

Here is a picture of the new Donna Sharp Rolling Duffel Bags. These bags are beautiful if I do say so myself. They have handles that raise up high enough so you're not bending over to pull the bag. They are just the right size to transport a small sewing machine. And, at this time, they would probably work as a carry-on bag. I hear they are going to be checking out carry-on sizes next but I think this one will work. They are only $129.95. That's way better than those other bags and way cuter!

Our youngest, Amanda, has decided on her college choice. She's going to.........drumroll, please............North Carolina State. They are the Wolfpack. I'm not really sure what that is and I couldn't find it on their web site. But, I'm sure I'll know what one is by the end of orientation. So, here's a picture of my new wardrobe. Don't tell Amanda, but OSU will still be #1 in my book! Oh, and for those of you that have been following the college saga, this is the one we were supposed to tour.

We've just returned from Portland, Oregon for the Spring Quilt Market. The temperature when we got there was 97!! Wow, it was HOT. But it wasn't just the weather that was hot, so was market. I always feel rejuvenated when I return and want to sew at 100 miles per hour. Here are some pictures of the quilts that I bought the fabric for. I love the feathered star one. I can't wait for it to arrive!

And, the winner is...... Kirsten Whitehouse. Our latest raffle quilt was won by Kirsten. Some of you may recognize her, she used to work here. She just bought a new house and was thrilled as she has the perfect place to hang it and she loved that it was made by us. We collected $63 for the Children's Hospital Burn Unit. I have decided that I'm going to match the amount collected to make it better! But, I know we can do better, too. The Billy Joel concert was awesome! We had ok seats so this picture was NOT taken by me. I counted.. I have seen Billy Joel in concert 10 times and I've seen his broadway musical Movin' Out twice! When's he coming back to Columbus? I don't know but I know I'll be there!

Ok, so back to the real world. We have received about 200 bolts of new fabric in the last few weeks. We have Amy Butler's newest fabrics, we have Noah's Ark by Jim Shore, we have the wildly popular Prairie Paisley by Moda and Roman Holiday and Malibu Monkey all by Moda. But wait..... there's more. We have Snow Wonderland (shown here) by Whimsicals and some of the line Fresh Squeezed by Moda. We've been busy with the sample making so stop by soon to see what's new!

The 5 step program

Don't have time for quilting? Here are 5 easy steps to get more quilting time with ease.

5. Carry a quilting magazine with you where ever you go. It's easy to pull it out when you have a few spare minutes. It's an fun way to de-stress since you're thinking about your favorite past time and get your creative juices flowing when you do get to your sewing space. And, if there's nothing in the magazine you want to keep, consider leaving it at the doctor's office and maybe you'll inspire a new quilter. Plus, wouldn't it be more fun to sit down at the doctor's office and see a quilting magazine rather than another article about Britney Spears!

4. Clean your sewing space. Ok, now I know this doesn't sound like fun.... but, if you take just a little time to be organized the next time you step into your space, you'll be ready to finish your latest project.

3. Make a list. Once your space is clean and organized, make a list of the most pressing projects to finish or supplies you need for your next project. Cross them off your list as you finish the projects and you'll feel a sense of accomplishment and you'll be ready to tackle the next project on you list.

2. Carry hand work with you. Have a little bag by the door or even in your car so when you find time on your hands, you'll have that little applique project or punchneedle ready to occupy that precious free time and make you smile!

1. Get up early. Try getting up one hour early one day per week. For me, this is my primary sewing time. I usually get up around 5:30 and sew for an hour each morning. I get a lot done and I don't feel like I've taken time out of my busy day. Plus, it's a happy way to start my day with my most favorite hobby .... QUILTING!

Since we're all snowed in this weekend, I thought I'd share a FREE charm pattern with you. You can do this with just about any charm pack but you need two. Enjoy ~

Carpenter’s Star Charm Quilt
Exclusive pattern for the Red Rooster Quilts Charm Club
November, 2007
32” Square
Materials Needed:2 – Oak Leaves & Reel Charm Packs by Moda
1/3 yard for binding
1 1/8 yard for backing
36” square of batting
4 ½” square ruler

Cutting Instructions: 12 – 4 ½” squares of light fabric
8 – light 5” squares cut in half once diagonally to yield 16
triangles
4 – light-medium 4 ½” squares
8 – light-medium 5” squares cut in half once diagonally to yield
16 triangles
32 – dark 5” squares cut in half once diagonally to yield 64
triangles

Lay out your pieces as shown in the diagram/photo. Sew the half square triangle blocks together first. Sew using a scant ¼” seam allowance and then trim block to be 4 ½” square.

Sew the blocks together into rows. Sew the rows together.

Cut 4 strips 2 1/4" for binding.

Quilt as desired and bind.

Here's a good laugh for the day. This is from Sandy Brawner of Quilt Country.

"I thought we could use this little laugh. It is about sewing so hopefully it will be OK. The first paragraph is from an excerpt of the 1949 Singer sewing manual and the response in the second paragraph is from a good friend of mine.

Advice from a Singer Sewing Manual from 1949: Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do. . . never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing. . .When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on . . .[If] you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should. . .

Oh, yeah? Well, how about this instead:
Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Turn the radio to a classic rockstation and set the volume at a level so that you will not be distracted by the phone, doorbell, smoke alarm, barking dogs or sirens. Throw a dishtowel over the dirty dishes and close the bedroom door if the bed is unmade so that you don't have to look at it. Put on some sweats and flip-flops and pin your hair back so that it won't get in your way. Get a coaster for your Shiner Bock or Diet Dr. Pepper and a bowl for your M&Ms. Sew until it is time to order pizza, and then sew some more."

This is Rocky. He's the greatest dog in the world except.........he barks too much! He is a miniature schnauzer, really. We keep his hair cut short because we like it that way. He has really long legs and Kevin often jokes we should have asked to see that father that was on the premises and checked his DNA to prove his paternity. But, I don't care. My new favorite notion

Ok, I'll admit it. I'm 40 something and I wear tri-focals. So, my new favorite notion is the self threading needle. No more trying to find the right distance and angle to hold the needle so I can see the hole. No more licking the thread to make it stiff. No more cursing, crying and whining. I have found the self-threading needle. The needle has a slit in it that you just pull the thread through. Easy, quick, threaded in just one try! And, I've tested it. It didn't come out through the slit. It still comes out when the thread gets too short but that's a whole different story.......

I LOVE Football

Ok, I think I can talk about it now that the pain has faded..... I am a Buckeye football fan. I especially love the Buckeyes and the Browns and the Packers. So, with that in mind, I wanted to go to the National Championship game. Surely the Buckeyes would prevail. Surely they would avenge last year's loss. Surely we'd shut down those Tigers and put to rest the SEC curse. Alas, surely wasn't to be. We had a blast, though. I really loved the pep rally. It was such a rush to be in a place with 15,000 other rabid buckeye fans. So, even though we lost, now I'm hooked. How/when can I get my next fix? I'll pin my hope on the Packers next. Please don't let me down......I don't think I can take it, again. Oh, and Santa, can I please go to the Superbowl if the Packers make it?

The most asked about fabric ever....

Would you believe that the most asked about fabric line so far has been....... The Wizard of Oz fabric. This will be a fun, and fast selling, collection. The first fabric to ship should be the sepia color tone. It's so fun. Red Rooster Quilts Charm Club Quilt Pattern
Finished size: ~36" x 36"

Supplies:

1 Charm Pack with 49 – 5” squares
¼ yard inner border
½ yard outer border
1/3 yard binding
1 yard backing
38” x 38” batting
4 ½” square ruler

Cut each of the 49 charm pack squares in half creating 2 – 2 ½” x 5” rectangles. Use one light rectangle and one dark rectangle and sew together along the 5” edge. Sew all pieces together in this manner.

Square up blocks to 4 ½” square.

Arrange blocks into 7 rows of 7. Place one block so that the seam is horizontal and the next block so that the seam is vertical. Continue to alternate this way for each row. Sew blocks into rows and then sew rows together.

Cut 4 – 1 ½” strips x width of fabric from the inner border. Sew onto sides and then top & bottom.

Cut 4 – 3 ½” strips x width of fabric from the outer border. Sew onto sides and then top and bottom.

Cut 4 – 2 ¼” strips x width of fabric from the binding fabric.

Quilt as desired and bind.

This pattern can be used with any of the 5” charm packs. Just change your quilt size and layout based upon the number of finished blocks from your charm pack.

That big white spot in the middle of the picture is not a mistake. It's a snowflake, or maybe I should say snowball, that is falling from the sky as I type. We've had a least 4" today and it's still coming. I've shoveled 4 times and I give up! I just can't keep up with it. So, if you're planning on coming to the shop this winter, please call first or check the web site to be sure we're open. I can't wait to go home and make a snowman. Ok, now this is not what you think. I'm not talking about the Ohio State Buckeyes going to the National Championship, even though I'm a big football fan and I may talk about them in the future. It all started last week when I got a call from Quilting Treasures, the manufacturer of the 1st ever Marie Osmond fabric line called Heirloom Garden. Seems that by ordering this beautiful fabric, (which by the way we still have some in stock) I was entered into a contest for two tickets to her concert and I won. So, off we traveled last night in the POURING rain to Van Wert, Ohio, yes I said Van Wert, to their beautiful new Performing Arts Center and saw Marie perform. It was a really small venue, just 850 people. I was told to report to will call for the tickets and they couldn't find the tickets. So, I thought, we drove all the way up here in the pouring rain to a sold out concert and we have no tickets. Never fear they took us to the venue manager and he had our two tickets along with our back stage passes to meet Marie with him. The concert was very nice and she had 7 of her 8 children with her who came on stage. Her oldest son sang a couple songs, too and boy, can he really sing. So, after the concert we were invited backstage to meet Marie. It was rather quick, just a quick picture and we were gone but she is very beautiful in person and gracious. So, here's the picture and ooops, had I know I was going to meet her, I'd have left the tennis shoes at home. Oh well, I don't think she noticed.

I've decided to join the 20th century and blog! So, here goes. Since this will be related to my quilt shop and quilting, I'll start out by introducing myself. My name is Karen O'Connor and along with my husband, Kevin, we own Red Rooster Quilts in Dublin, OH. It's been my dream for years to own a quilt shop. And, it's been a reality for over 2 years. We have a 3000 square foot quilt shop with just about as many bolts of fabric.
