Mystery Quilt

I have designed a Mystery Quilt for The Ohio Country Register. I love this little paper. It always has ads for some great little stores around Ohio that up right up my alley. I try to fit them in whenever I travel. We even picked one up last week while in North Carolina and stopped at a couple of quilt shops. Anyways, for those of you that like mystery quilts, in each issue this year there will be a clue. Get your friends together and try it. It only uses three colors. Ever buy a larger scale print and say: "what am I going to do with this"? Well, this quilt would be perfect for those. You need 1 larger scale print, 1 medium to dark fabric to coordinate with it and one light background. Simple, right? For those people who are stumped by picking out fabric for it, just give us some color options and we'll do it for you. A kit costs $69.95. The quilt is 52" x 70" finished, a perfect lap size.

Don't have The Ohio Country Register? Just tune in here the first part of January, March, May, July, September & November for all the clues.

This is also a good project to use up your stash. So, lets get started!

Red Rooster Quilts presents a Mystery Quilt for 2009. In each issue of the Ohio Country Register, a clue will be printed instructing you how to piece together this original design lap quilt. This mystery quilt is fun for beginners and experienced quilter's, too. The finished size will be 54" x 72". A kit for the top and binding can be purchased from Red Rooster Quilts for $69.95 plus shipping in the following colors: Red, Beige & Blue, Fall Colors, Christmas Colors, Antique Reproduction fabrics, Scarlet & Grey or Bright Contemporary Colors. You may purchase a kit through our web site at http://www.redroosterquilts.com/ or call us at 614-734-9007. See our ad on page 5 of this issue.

Fabric Requirements:
Fabric A: 1 & 1/4 yard of a focus fabric, medium - dark color with medium to large scale print
Fabric B: 1 & 1/4 yard of a med-dark fabric to coordinate with the focus fabric
(Or, if you would like the quilt a little scrappy use 1/4 yards of six different
fabrics that coordinate with focus fabric.)
Fabric C: 4 yards of light background fabric
3/4 yard binding fabric
3 & 1/2 yard for backing fabric

Clue #1
Cut 9 - 2 1/2" strips from Fabric C
Cut 9 - 2 1/2" strips from Fabric B (or 1 strip from each of the 6 different fabrics and 1 more strip from 3 of the fabrics for a total of 9 strips if making scrappy)

Sew one Fabric B strip to one Fabric C strip along the long edge. Repeat with remaining strips. Press toward the dark.

Cut 232 - 1 1/2" slices from the nine strips.

Sew two of the 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces together to make a four patch. You will need 116 four patch blocks. These will be rectangle in shape four patches. They will measure 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".
Be sure to sew them together so that fabric C is in the upper left and lower right corner and Fabric B is in the upper right and lower left corners.

Don't fret, this is the step with the most pieces. It will be easier from here on out. Don't forget to pick up the next issue of the Ohio Country Register for the Red Rooster Quilts Mystery Quilt Clue #2.
